SAFETY ADVISORY: ROAD CLOSURE AND ACCESS RESTRICTIONS
Due to severe shoreline erosion, portions of Point Dume Beach remain closed or have restricted access while Los Angeles County conducts emergency shoreline protection and infrastructure repairs.
Current Access Restrictions
- Point Dume Beach access road: Beginning at the intersection of Westward Beach Road and Birdview Avenue is closed to vehicles at all times.
- Pedestrian and cyclist access: Pedestrians and cyclists are prohibited from entering active construction areas. Construction generally takes place from 5 a.m. to 3 p.m.
- Restrooms 1, 2 and 3: Closed due to damage to the water service. Temporary toilets and handwashing stations are available.
Emergency Repair Update
The County continues working to protect public access, beach facilities and infrastructure damaged or threatened by coastal erosion. While some shoreline protection work is complete, additional repairs are underway or planned.

Point Dume has over one mile of ocean frontage with 34 acres of sand. It is surrounded by headlands, cliffs, rocky coves, and vast beach access.
Amenities include restrooms, showers, restaurants, 373 parking spaces, and a hiking trail. Popular activities include swimming, diving, surfing, and scuba diving. The hiking trail leads to an ancient coastal bluff sand dune.
On a clear day visitors can enjoy an incredible view encompassing the entire Santa Monica Bay and distant Catalina Island.
A stairway from the east side of the bluff-top gives access to a more isolated beach with fine tide-pooling opportunities. Like Zuma Beach, Point Dume is a great place to watch grey whales during their December-March migration.

EMERGENCY EROSION REPAIRS

Overview
Severe shoreline erosion has damaged the access road between the Westward Beach Road/Birdview Avenue intersection and the Point Dume Beach parking lot, as well as water infrastructure serving public beach facilities. Continued erosion has also threatened existing shoreline protection, public restrooms and lifeguard facilities.
In response, the Los Angeles County Department of Beaches and Harbors (DBH) has undertaken emergency shoreline protection work along the access road and at Point Dume Beach. This includes installing new rock revetments and repairing existing ones to help stabilize vulnerable areas and protect public infrastructure. At the City of Malibu’s request, the County also installed additional shoreline protection near Birdview Avenue to protect the City’s right-of-way.
DBH continues to monitor shoreline conditions and coordinate emergency repairs with the City of Malibu, Los Angeles County Public Works and relevant regulatory agencies while preparing for the upcoming winter storm season.

Severe shoreline erosion damaged the beach access road and water infrastructure serving public restrooms, prompting closures. - August 5–13, 2026 | Initial Shoreline Protection
In Area 1, contractors installed approximately 235 feet of emergency rock revetment to protect the beach access road. - August 2026 | Water Infrastructure Replacement
Los Angeles County Public Works Waterworks District 29 installed a replacement water main and meter. - September 8–October 23, 2026 | Additional Shoreline Protection
In Area 2, contractors installed approximately 230 feet of new rock revetment to protect the beach access road. Of that total, 120 feet was installed at the City of Malibu’s request to protect its right-of-way near the Westward Beach Road/Birdview Avenue intersection. In Area 3, contractors repaired approximately 230 feet of existing rock revetment.

Emergency shoreline protection work began near the Point Dume lifeguard building and two public restroom facilities. This work will be ongoing. - Upcoming | Existing Shoreline Protection Repairs

Regulatory Authorization and Agency Coordination
Emergency shoreline protection work completed or underway to date was authorized by the California Coastal Commission and the City of Malibu. As shoreline conditions evolve and additional repairs are identified, DBH continues to coordinate with regulatory agencies regarding any additional required authorizations.
DBH is also working with the City of Malibu to protect the Westward Beach Road/Birdview Avenue intersection and with Los Angeles County Public Works Waterworks District 29 to restore damaged water infrastructure.
Public Access and Safety
Portions of Point Dume Beach and the beach access road remain restricted while emergency repairs continue. Visitors should observe posted closures and avoid active construction areas.
