Capital Projects
The Los Angeles County Department of Beaches and Harbors' mission
is to maintain the
beaches and Marina del Rey for the recreation of the citizens of
Los Angeles County. We
are currently pursuing six important projects to improve public
access, safety, and enjoyment
of the County's beaches.
DOCKWEILER STATE BEACH GENERAL IMPROVEMENT
Improvements
to Dockweiler State Beach and the Recreational Vehicle Park were
completed in September 2006. The main entrance, parking kiosk, and
four parking lots were rebuilt. Four restrooms (Deauville, Gillis,
Kilgore, and the RV Park) were completely reconstructed to meet
ADA standards. The concession stand was also remodeled for an updated
look, and along with the other buildings to provide more durable
mission-style buildings, consistent with other beach facilities
in the County. New landscaping was added throughout the beach and
RV Park to enhance the natural beauty of the shoreline.
The lifeguard substations at Imperial and Culver Boulevards were
reconstructed, as well as other buildings used by the lifeguards
and the beach maintenance crew. Improved lighting plus resurfacing
of the parking lots was also done to make a visit to the beach more
enjoyable. The Recreational Vehicle Park underwent a major renovation
to convert all spaces to full hook-ups. The surface of the parking
area was resurfaced and restriped to provide easier parking.
DOCKWEILER YOUTH CENTER

This project will provide a youth activity center at Dockweiler
State Beach to serve as the southern headquarters for the County's
W.A.T.E.R. youth education
program. The proposed 8,800 square foot
building will consist of multi-purpose meeting and training facilities,
administrative space, indoor storage facilities, restroom and locker
facilities and beach equipment storage. Construction is
scheduled to begin in April 2007.
VENICE BEACH REFURBISHMENT
World-famous
Venice Beach will have a new look too. The improvements for Venice
Beach which are currently under construction include new restrooms
to meet ADA standards. The restrooms, as well as the parking kiosks,
will match the décor of the City of Los Angeles Oceanfront
Walk.
New concessions are being built for the rental of rollerblades and
bicycles, and the parking lots will be resurfaced. Construction
began in December 2005 and is scheduled to be completed by February
2007.
WILL ROGERS STATE BEACH GENERAL REFURBISHMENT
New
mission-style buildings at Will Rogers State Beach will be built
forthe public. The promenade between the concessions, playground,
and restrooms will be ready for an evening stroll to view the distinctive
landscaping along the beach. The promenade will be easily accessible
for wheelchairs, and four restrooms will be remodeled to meet ADA
standards. The renovated lifeguard station and garage will help
the lifeguards provide more safety coverage of this popular beach.
The view of the ocean from Will Rogers State Beach will also be
improved by upgrades to the parking lot along the coastline. These
improvements were begun on December 2005 and are scheduled to be
completed by May 2007.
WILL ROGERS STATE BEACH
COASTLINE DRIVE PARKING LOT AND VIEW DECK PROJECT
The northern boundary of Will Rogers State Beach will be made accessible
to the public with the construction of the Coastline Drive Parking
Lot and View Deck Project. The capital improvement project will
provide shoreline protection along the coastal bluff, and construct
an accessible viewing area where the beach visitor can sit and enjoy
the natural features of the County coastline. In addition, the Coastline
Drive Parking Lot and View Deck Project will reconstruct the former
public parking facility and upgrade pedestrian access in compliance
with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
The Coastline Drive project site is located on the south side of
Pacific Coast Highway at the intersection of Coastline Drive, across
from the Getty Villa. Years ago a restaurant, named “The Jetty”,
operated from the west end of the site. The building burned down
in 1981. The site has experienced severe erosion and settlement,
and the parking lot is presently closed to the public.
The rehabilitation of the Coastline Drive site will preserve the
integrity of the coastal bluff, enhance passive enjoyment of the
County coastline, as well as restore beach access from above. Construction
is scheduled to begin in May 2007, with substantial completion by
March 2008.
